Redamancy Coop was founded by Carlyn in 2018 with the sole purpose of bridging gaps in the fiber arts community. To be an educational tool and introducing you to designers in the community whether it is creating a pattern or creating yarn. It was Carlyn’s goal to make this a place where all felt welcome and all could learn and create at their level. For a beginner, give you to the tools to jump in on your own or where to look for help. For a novice or advanced, help you find new patterns to dive into or new artists to appreciate and support.
This space is also meant to support local fiber communities. Which means spotlighting local yarn stores and classes specific to Albuquerque, New Mexico with hopes of expanding. (There might also be yarn stores highlighted from various nearby states from time to time.)
Who is running this space
In the Beginning, when Carlyn started to dream and create this space in her head she had two options as to how to market this space. Either as an ‘influencer’ where her face, likeness, and personal opinions would be the driving force of content. Or as a brand, where it would be it’s own entity. Because of her introverted personality and her want to be as inclusive as possible, she chose the brand route. She wants this place to stand on it’s own two feet. For this place to be about the community it serves.
In response to the conversation on diversity and lack their of in the fiber world she did feel it is her and our obligation to tell you who is currently running the show. Why? Because transparency. It gives you the information you need and helps you decide if this is a safe place for you. For the present moment, current content will be based upon what she is working on and gravitates towards. This is not a forever thing, but in this beginning stage, it will be.
Carlyn is a white, cis-gendered female, married, a stay at home mom, and a Christian. She grew up in Texas and currently lives in New Mexico.
To any one person, each of those things paints a picture of who is curating this space. Each person will have their own interpretation of that picture. We are aware and understand this reality.
She specifically chose to not to go the influencer route because she did not want it to be a deterrent. She does not expect anyone to agree or mirror her life choices to be a part of this community. We do understand that every single person sees the world a little differently. Our want is to allow space for all to feel welcome. Differences in any form is why this place called earth is beautiful and it is where we can better ourselves. But we do understand some people will feel uncomfortable in this space because of who is curating it. Our goal is to be open and honest with you.
Redamancy Coop has been watching, listening, and learning about the lack of diversity in the fiber community since mid January of 2019. We are very thankful that it was brought to the communities attention. We are currently doing our work behind the scenes. Our hearts hurt that it had to be said and how difficult the push for a better community has been.
That being said, Carlyn feels that she can’t consider herself an ally. She and we still have a lot to learn. A lifetime of work to do. We want you to be informed so you can make the best educated decision about this community. It is our duty to be transparent with you. We chose to be a Coop from the beginning specifically for that reason.
But if you choose to stay, we want to say thank you. We would love to hear your input on how we can continue to make this a safe place for you.
